Forward Deployed Engineer salary report 2026
Every published salary range on the board, deduplicated to one band per employer — and what the medians hide.
Most salary data for this job family is self-reported, years stale, or averaged across titles that mean different things at different companies. This is none of those: it is what employers themselves wrote down, in postings that were live on this board on 20 August 2026.
The headline first. Across deployed and customer-facing engineering roles, the median advertised US band has a midpoint of about $195,000. But the median is the least interesting number here. The spread inside a single title is wider than the gap between titles, the same job pays roughly $48,000 more at an AI lab than at an enterprise platform, and more than two thirds of postings publish no number at all.
What each role pays
Every figure below is the midpoint of an advertised band, and each employer’s band counts once no matter how many cities it was posted in — that correction matters more than it sounds, and the Method section explains why.
| Role (primary label) | Bands | 10th pct | Median | 90th pct | Published a range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solutions Architect | 39 | $172k | $216k | $276k | 35% |
| Forward Deployed Engineer | 17 | $159k | $215k | $294k | 22% |
| Applied AI Engineer | 28 | $148k | $194k | $263k | 23% |
| Solutions / Sales Engineer | 51 | $120k | $185k | $254k | 25% |
| Implementation / Delivery Engineer | 40 | $117k | $177k | $215k | 30% |
Midpoints of advertised US dollar bands, in thousands. “Bands” is the number of distinct employer bands behind each row; “published a range” is the share of that role’s live postings carrying one. Forward Deployed Engineer rests on 17 bands and is the least reliable line in the table — treat its percentiles as indicative.
This table is a snapshot of August 2026 and stays as published. For the same figures recomputed nightly against whatever is live today, including seniority and country breakdowns, see the salary benchmarks.
Two things stand out. Solutions Architect and Forward Deployed Engineer pay the same — $216k against $215k, a difference far inside the noise of a sample this size — despite being, as the scored dimensions show, very different jobs. And Implementation / Delivery is the floor of this family at $177k, with the tightest ceiling: its 90th percentile, $215k, is roughly what the other two pay at the median.
The AI lab premium is real, and it is about $48,000
Split the same bands by what kind of company posted them and a gap opens that is larger than any gap between the job titles:
- AI labs — $228,750 median midpoint, across 18 bands.
- Startups — $195,000, across 20 bands.
- Enterprise platforms — $180,875, across 123 bands.
That is a $47,875 spread between the top and bottom category, on job titles that read almost identically. The lab figure rests on only four employers that publish ranges at all — Anthropic, Cohere, Scale AI, and Together AI — so it is the thinnest number in this piece. It is also the most consistent: the lab 10th percentile, $199,778, sits above the enterprise-platform median.
Anthropic posts the highest median band of any employer with three or more distinct bands on the board, at $295,000. NVIDIA ($227,750, 10 bands) and Databricks ($214,927, 12 bands) anchor the enterprise end of the same distribution.
Seniority buys less than you would expect — until Principal
Grouping bands by the level named in the title gives a ladder with one very flat stretch in the middle:
- Associate / junior — $92,500 (5 bands)
- No level in the title — $187,500 (93 bands)
- Senior — $187,638 (51 bands)
- Staff — $202,500 (11 bands)
- Principal / Distinguished — $237,800 (9 bands)
The interesting line is the unlevelled one. Postings that name no level at all pay within $140 of the ones that say “Senior” — which means an unlevelled posting in this family is not an entry-level posting. It is a senior posting that didn’t say so. Candidates who filter for “Senior” in the title are excluding an equally-paid pool nearly twice the size.
The Associate row is the other end of that observation: five bands, median $92,500, almost all of them pre-sales desk roles. There is very little genuine junior hiring in this family, which is consistent with what the job is — being trusted alone in front of a customer’s production system is not a first job.
Remote costs you nothing
Split the same bands by remote policy:
- Remote — $187,638 (51 bands)
- Hybrid — $186,250 (86 bands)
- On-site — $155,000 (9 bands)
Remote and hybrid land within $1,400 of each other — no measurable remote discount in this family. The on-site figure is lower, but it rests on nine bands and is dominated by junior desk-based sales engineering, so read it as a fact about which jobs are on-site rather than as a penalty for showing up.
Same title, $135,000 apart
The single most useful number in this piece is not a median. It is the width of each role’s distribution:
- Solutions / Sales Engineer runs from $120k at the 10th percentile to $254k at the 90th — a 2.1x spread inside one job title.
- Forward Deployed Engineer runs $159k to $294k: the highest ceiling in the family, and a $135k spread.
- Only Implementation / Delivery is genuinely narrow, $117k to $215k, and it is narrow because the work varies less.
A median is therefore close to useless as a personal benchmark. Knowing that Sales Engineers make $185k tells you nothing about whether $150k is a good offer, because the answer depends almost entirely on which company and which segment — and those, unlike the title, are visible in the posting.
The advertised band itself is wide too: the median posting quotes a range spanning 32% of its own midpoint. A $180k–$250k posting is not offering you $215k. It is telling you the level is not yet decided.
Most employers still say nothing
Of 1,332 live postings, 413 published a salary range — 31%. Of 49 employers with live postings, 33 publish a range on at least one, and far fewer do it consistently. By role, transparency runs from 35% (Solutions Architect) down to 22% (Forward Deployed Engineer).
That number measures jurisdiction more than employer virtue: US pay transparency laws in California, Colorado, New York, and Washington are doing most of the work, which is also why 364 of the 413 published ranges are denominated in US dollars. Every figure in this report is therefore a statement about US-advertised pay, and probably skews toward the states that compel disclosure — which are also among the highest-cost.
How to read a band
- Check the company category before the title. It moves the number more. The same posting is worth roughly $48k more at a lab than at an enterprise platform.
- A missing level in the title is not a junior role. Unlevelled postings pay like senior ones.
- Treat the bottom of the band as the offer. Bands span about a third of their midpoint; the top is for a candidate who arrives already levelled up.
- No published range means no information, not a low one — 69% of postings here publish nothing, including several of the best-paying employers.
Every posting on this board shows its published range where the employer gave one, and the filters run on the classifier’s reading of the description rather than on the title. Start from Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Architect, or Applied AI Engineer, or read what separates these five roles if you are still deciding which one you are aiming at.
Method
Every job published on DeployedJobs as of 20 August 2026 was read through the public API: 1,332 postings, of which 413 carry a salary range and 364 carry one denominated in US dollars with both a minimum and a maximum. Non-USD ranges (20 EUR, 15 CAD, 5 GBP, and eleven others) are excluded rather than converted, because converting would invent precision the underlying posting does not have.
Figures are computed over distinct (employer, band) pairs, not over postings. This matters more than any other choice here. Databricks accounts for 49 of the 66 Forward Deployed Engineer postings carrying a US range, and 47 of those repeat one identical band — $182,000 to $250,208 — across different cities. Counted naively, “the median FDE salary” would have been that one company’s internal band, and the 10th and 90th percentiles would have come out as the same number as the median. Deduplicating leaves 161 distinct bands from 33 employers, which is the sample every figure above rests on.
Where a row rests on a band count in the single or low double digits — Forward Deployed Engineer at 17, AI labs at 18, Staff at 11, Principal at 9, on-site at 9 — the figure is indicative rather than robust, and is labelled as such in the text. Percentiles are linear-interpolated, and “median band” means the median of band midpoints. Postings are grouped by their primary role label, which an LLM classifier assigns by reading the description rather than the title, with low-confidence results going to a human review queue instead of straight to publication.
One role on this board is missing from this report entirely. Inference Engineer was added to the taxonomy days before this analysis and has no live postings yet, so it has no salary data to report. It will appear in the next refresh.
