Solutions Engineer Jobs

Solutions / Sales Engineers are the pre-sales technical experts: demos, proofs of concept, and technical qualification. Customer-facing and technical, often with a quota component. Almost every enterprise software vendor hires for it, and the AI labs have been building the function out from scratch as they move upmarket. The postings below are scored for sales involvement and coding intensity, which is the fastest way to separate the demo-heavy roles from the ones that expect real code.

What a Solutions / Sales Engineer actually does

A Solutions Engineer is the technical half of a sales team. The job is to establish whether a product can genuinely solve a prospect's problem, prove it convincingly, and answer the questions a buyer's engineers will ask before they sign off.

It is a real technical role — proofs of concept have to work, and the audience is usually engineers who will notice if they do not — but it is measured commercially. Most Solutions Engineer postings carry a variable compensation component tied to the team's number, which is the clearest structural difference from the other four titles here.

The titles Solutions Engineer, Sales Engineer, and Pre-Sales Engineer are largely interchangeable across employers, so all three are treated as the same role on this board rather than as separate searches.

  • Running technical demos tailored to a specific prospect's stack
  • Scoping and building proofs of concept under a deadline
  • Answering security reviews, architecture questions, and RFP sections
  • Qualifying out deals the product genuinely cannot serve
  • Handing a closed account over to implementation or delivery

What hiring teams screen for

  • Product depth and fast ramp-up on new tooling

  • SQL and data exploration
  • API integration
  • Discovery and technical qualification
  • Written communication under time pressure

Common questions

Is a Solutions Engineer a sales job or an engineering job?
Both, structurally. The work is technical and the measurement is commercial. If a quota is a dealbreaker for you, check the posting — this board scores sales involvement per role so you can filter it down.
Can you move from Solutions Engineering into an FDE role?
It is a common path, and the reverse happens too. The gap to close is usually production engineering depth rather than customer skill, which the pre-sales side already builds.
What is the difference between Solutions Engineer and Solutions Architect?
Solutions Engineer is normally pre-sales and quota-carrying; Solutions Architect normally owns the deployment design and stays past the signature. Employers are inconsistent about this, so the posting matters more than the title.
